CEITEC - Central European Institute of Technology, www.ceitec.eu, is a
project focused on the establishment of a European centre of excellence in the area of life sciences
and advanced materials and technologies. The project is implemented by a consortium of universities and research
institutes based in Brno, Czech Republic, led by Masaryk University.
The main management figure of the new centre will be the Executive Director. The scientific direction of the centre
will be formulated by the Scientific Director. These two main leaders of the centre will work in close cooperation.
Attention will be given to appropriate representation of both scientific fields encompassed by CEITEC (life sciences,
material sciences) in the professional background of candidates for these top leadership positions. The rights and
obligations of the top management of the centre are stipulated by the partnership agreement. Depending on the
individuals selected, some modification of the rights and obligations may be made.
Powers and responsibilities:
Scientific Director
- Is responsible to the Executive Director for the quality of scientific content of the Project
- Is responsible for the fulfilment of the research objectives and individual targets set by the Executive
Director
- Coordinates the Research Programmes with the purpose of increasing synergies among Research Programmes and
facilitates the fulfilment of the Common Research Objectives
- Sets individual work targets for the Research Programmes Coordinators
- Assures an independent assessment of the use of the Core Facilities (principles, quality and efficiency)
- Approves criteria for international tenders for Research Group Leaders
- Suggests to the Executive Director candidates and criteria for selection of Research Programme Coordinators
- Submits to International Scientific Advisory Board plan of research activities of CEITEC
- Suggests to the Executive Director for approval scope and criteria for Common Evaluation of Scientific Excellence
- Manages the Grant Office
- Cooperates closely with the International Scientific Advisory Board
- It is foreseen that the Scientific Director can devote part of his/her capacity to his/her own
research
Qualifications - experience:
- Scientific excellence (main emphasis) in the field of life or material sciences, with corresponding publication
record measured by citation index and h-index (preferably over 20)
- Managerial experience – at least 5 years track record in managing science and research teams on various levels
- Proven track record in acquiring, managing and coordinating international grants (ERC, FP7, NiH and others) in
access of EUR 1 mil. in the last 5 years
- Languages: English proficiency (knowledge of Czech language will not be considered)
Qualifications – personal profile:
- Proven capacity to take decisions, both at strategic and operational level
- Strong sense of responsibility, initiative and self-motivation along with an ambition to set up a new European
Centre of Excellence
- Proven stress-resistance, flexibility, adaptability and capability of motivating staff
Period of office:
- Initial period 3 years with possibility of serving second term of 6 years.
